The success rate of infertility treatment using the latest assisted reproductive technologies is very high. Nevertheless, not all women or couples are successful in retaining pregnancy whereby their own genetic material (eggs and sperm) is used. 

AVA Clinic has been providing infertility treatment using donor material (eggs and sperm) for more than 20 years now.

The uniqueness of treatment using donor material lies in the individual selection of donors based on your criteria and requests.

Patients can receive the key information about the physical and personal traits of a donor, including information on whether a donor has children and on a donor’s educational background and ethnicity. Patients do not receive any information to enable to identify a donor in any manner however. On the other hand, donors are not provided with any information about patients.

All eggs obtained as a result of donor stimulation belong to you only. We do not provide these eggs to any other patients! Patients of AVA CLINIC may avail of:

- Donor embryos (consisting of donor eggs and sperm)

Donor eggs and partner's sperm

In this case an egg from a donor you selected is fertilised by your partner’s sperm. Infertility treatment using donor eggs provides a unique opportunity to women to become pregnant and give birth to a baby even if they do not have any of their own eggs.

Donor eggs and donor sperms

It is infertility treatment whereby the eggs of a donor of your choice are fertilised by sperm of a donor from a sperm bank. This treatment method is suitable both for couples and women who do not have a sexual partner. The use of both donor eggs and donor sperm is required when patient eggs and sperm cannot be used for infertility treatment. Main stages of treatment using donor eggs and donor sperm.

Selection of donors

The initial selection of a donor is based on the following main biometric characteristics:

– Hair colour – Eye colour – Height – Weight

Subsequent selection of a donor for patients is performed by a coordinator of the clinic on a case-by-case basis, based on the phenotypic similarity of the recipient and the donor. To achieve maximum physical similarity, the coordinator may use photographs. Additional parameters (educational background, occupation, hobbies, donor age, whether the donor has children, blood group) are taken into account at patients’ request.

How are egg donors selected?

1. Young healthy women aged 18–35 may be donors (according to Latvian legislation). 2. During the initial visit, a donor has an interview with a doctor, during which information about the overall health of the donor and her relatives as well as any congenital disorders in the family is obtained. Information about the phenotypic particularities of the donor’s appearance, the donor’s educational background, etc. is also collected. 3. The donor undergoes a gynaecologic examination and an ultrasound scan to identify any gynaecological abnormalities.

4. Vaginal swabs and blood are taken to identify sexually transmitted and infectious diseases (AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, microbiological and cytological vaginal swabs).

5. Genetic testing (karyotyping) to exclude congenital chromosomal disorders and abnormalities is performed.

6. The donor also has visits to a psychiatrist and an addiction medicine specialist to evaluate the donor’s mental health and check the donor’s medical records and exclude any risk of mental and substance use disorders.
